A motorbike escort was arranged in honour of Barbara and Sidney Samways who tragically died in a crash on the C13 Higher Shaftesbury Road

MORE than 100 bikers turned out in tribute to a beloved couple who left their family and friends with ‘wonderful memories’.

Barbara and Sidney Samways tragically died in a crash at the start of April. Mr Samways, 74, died at the scene of the collision on the C13 Higher Shaftesbury Road near Compton Abbas Airfield and Mrs Samways, 71, died a few days later at Southampton General Hospital.

They had been riding their black Kawasaki motorbike.

A motorbike escort was arranged to accompany the couple’s final journey. They met at Weymouth park and ride before the ride to Weymouth Crematorium for the funeral on Friday

Mrs Samways’ daughter Jo Kempster said her mum and stepdad lived in the Weymouth area before moving to Blandford. They travelled all over Europe together.

Mrs Samways lived in Weymouth from the age of three, and attended St Pauls Infants School, St Marys Junior School and then Weymouth Grammar school. She also worked at Winfrith for the Dragon Program and, after moving to Blandford, for the North Dorset Conservative Association for MPs Nicolas Baker and Robert Walter.

She was a lifelong reader of the Dorset Echo and would have it delivered by post when she lived in Blandford.

Mr Samways was born in Martinstown and grew up around there and Weymouth, moving to Blandford in 1994. He helped to build the Preston beach Road sea defence, working for Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and Wessex Water.

Jo said: “Sidney had been riding motorbikes since he could walk and has always had bikes, riding scrambles, trials for Weymouth and Bridport MCC and Road Bikes.

“They have been all over on their road bikes, to France, Germany, Andorra, Switzerland and Italy. They attended the Moto GP every year at Le Mans in France and were due to go this year as well as a trip to the Pyrenees. They were members of three bike clubs: The Dorset Honda Owners Club, The Red House Bike Club and Purbeck Motorcycle Club.

“Their two main loves were the motorbikes and their grandchildren who they doted on.”
She added: “We are all truly and absolutely devastated but also so grateful for the wonderful memories they have left us with.”

A 24-year-old Shaftesbury man was arrested after the crash on suspicion of driving offences, and has been released on bail until the end of June pending further enquiries. Anyone with information about the crash on Sunday, April 2, who has not already contacted police is asked to call 101.

Thank you.
